Seeds and Nuts – Nature’s Protein Boost
Protein is an important nutrient for the body. Seeds and nuts are a good way to meet minimum daily requirements for protein. They’re full flavored and a tasty addition to baked goods. Seeds and nuts add texture to favorite recipes.

Seeds To Make Baked Goods Spectacular
Plain quick breads and biscuits come alive when caraway seeds are added. Poppy seed muffins are a big favorite at breakfast or mid-afternoon snack time. Spice up pizza or quiche with a chili infused pumpkin seed topping. Blend chili, garlic powder to taste and pumpkin seeds together for topping. This is also a good for roasted meats, chicken and fish. Sunflower seeds blended with cardamom or tarragon can be added to cake batter or pie crusts. Sunflower seeds serve double duty as topping for cakes. Dredge moistened sunflower seeds in colored sugar, dry and add as topping. Create sunflower seed cookies with a simple sugar cookie recipe.

Nuts – A Baker’s Helper
Walnuts, pecans and almonds are among most baker’s favorite addition to cakes, pies, muffins and breads. Hazelnuts, Brazil nuts, pistachios, pine nuts, cashews, macadamia nuts and peanuts add texture to cookies, tarts, pastries and tortes.

Summers in Florida are known for their hot days filled with beautiful beaches, cloudless sunny skies, and wonderful times with friends and family. What better way to celebrate the love of the summer season than with festive decorated cupcakes for your next gathering? There are many different themes and decorations that fit perfectly with any summer get together. To celebrate Independence Day, cupcakes topped with red, white, and blue are sure to be a hit. A fresh cupcake spread with creamy white icing is the perfect canvas for a fondant or gel flag design or a firework made from sprinkles.This{{/tag} helps explain it more. For anyone who loves the water, the ideal decoration starts with a splashy blue frosting. Animal cookies and life rafts made from gummy rings bring the ocean fun to your table. Or maybe designs of delicious fish in a rainbow of colors will delight. They can easily be created from a wide variety of candy toppings combined with a splash of colored frosting. Even a sugary shark will be taken with a smile. Nothing says summer like mountains of fresh flowers. With so many ways to create them, you can’t go wrong. They will certainly bring beauty to the table.

It can be hard for those with diabetes to find yummy baking recipes that are not laden with sugar and other unhealthy ingredients. However, it does not need to be so hard to make baked goods that are also diabetic-friendly. Here are some tips for making sugar-free baking easy.

1.Use a sugar substitute in place of sugar. In this day and age, there are many sugar substitutes available at grocery stores. However, make sure you read the label to see which ones can be used for baking.
2.Use a different sweetener altogether in place of sugar. Fruit juices, honey and agave nectar can all sweeten baked goods while being better for those with diabetes.
3.Use half the sugar suggested in the recipe, especially if there are other sweet ingredients in the recipe, such as vanilla or honey.
4.For recipes that use white flour, use half white flour and half whole-wheat flour.
5.Use unsweetened apple sauce instead of oil.
6.Substitute low-fat ricotta cheese or low-fat cream cheese for whipping cream in recipes.
7.Look for recipes or recipes books that are made specifically for diabetics. In the case of recipe books, they can offer both sugar-free recipes and advice on diabetic cooking.

Winter is the season to look out for if you have young children or are prone to getting sick. Harsh weather in the winter time dramatically increases the amount of cold and flu cases. The immune system in your body was created intentionally to protect your body and heal it when you are sick. Preparing for winter may include researching baking recipes that include immune boosting ingredients. Consider the following ingredients when shopping, to get your body weather ready.
Vitamin C
Most people know that Vitamin C is good for you when you have a cold, but what they don-t know is Vitamin C can actually help prevent you from getting sick in the first place. Like all immune boosting foods, Vitamin C should be included to prevent illnesses as well as healing. Oranges, grapefruits and other citrus fruits offer solid amounts of Vitamin C at a low cost. They are great for cookies, cakes and the rind is great for tea, used to complement the treats.
Blueberries
A natural antioxidant, blueberries are known for boosting the immune system and for adding flavorful color to any baked goods including muffins, coffee cake and pancakes.
Pomegranates
Beautiful and nutritious, pomegranates are an antioxidant perfect for breads, muffins and scones.

Making dinner can be such a hassle. It is not so much the cooking part. It is figuring out what to make. Trying to please every one that will be eating and having the ingredients needed to make the meal. Sometimes, it just isn’t fun making dinner. Using your leftovers can make this process a little easier and more convenient. Besides, in this economy no one wants to waste anything.

If you had tacos and you have some leftover meat, you could use it to make empanada’s or stuffed pasta. If you have left over roast, chicken, pork chops or steak, you could cook up some rice and veggies and have a stirfry. You might have to be a little creative when it comes to using left overs. You never know what you could come up with.

It could also be as simple as using the same veggies or salad from the night before. Another great way to use leftovers is to have a leftover night. Just reheat what ever you have left from dinner and everyone can choose what they want. Leftovers for lunch is also a very yummy economical way to go about having lunch.

Leftovers, the new dinner!

Florida-s a great place to read, what with all the beaches. When you-re not watching the Bucs on Sunday Ticket on DIRECT TV get out there and peruse some of the state-s best independent bookstores. Here are a few of our favorites
Inkwell-s ” Touting itself as Tampa-s only independent bookstore Inkwells is practically an institution. The staff is friendly and the coffee-s strong and there-s no doubt you can kill an afternoon (or a weekend) among the shelves here.
Haslam-s ” Located in St. Petersburg, Haslam-s is the city-s biggest new and used bookstore. There are thousands upon thousands of titles here and they-ve got an impressive array of magazine options as well. Bring some comfy walking shoes and some patience.
Brant-s Used Books ” Right here in Sarasota is one of Florida-s oldest and largest used bookstores ” Brant-s. It-s got a devoted local following and some of the more comfy seating around but don-t expect a Starbucks style coffee shop here. Brant-s specializes in books, not in lattes.
Get out there and read the summer away here in sunny Florida!

Baking as a family can be a lot of fun and a great way to get children familiar with the kitchen. Simple steps will help children learn to follow directions and measuring ingredients will help with math skills. In addition to the educational value, you will have time to grow in your relationship. Children are also more willing to eat the food that they have created, so you may be able to get them to try foods that they normally would not try. Here is a simple, tasty recipe for Marshmallow Peanut Butter Surprise that you and your kids can try at home.
You will need a package of crescent roll dough (found near the dairy section of your grocery store), peanut butter, marshmallows, and chocolate chips. Separate the dough into the 8 pieces that it comes in. Have your child spread the peanut butter over the crescent, add a few chocolate chips, and put the marshmallow in the center. Fold the dough over the marshmallow. Bake at 350 degrees for about 10 minutes or until golden brown. The fun thing about this tasty treat is that the marshmallow will “disappear” as it cooks. Let it cool and then sit down to enjoy!

Enjoying a home cooked meal doesn’t mean breaking the bank. A few simple ingredients combined with care will result in a satisfying and healthy day.

Frozen vegetables are the most economical way of purchasing vegetables. There are tastes for everyone, as most veggies complement any meal. Try buying in bulk as much as possible. Often you can save a lot of money on these frequently necessary ingredients.

Pasta is another great way of eating simply and isn’t expensive. Try making improvised spaghetti dishes that utilize your frozen vegetables. Use spinach, garbanzo beans, broccoli, zucchini, corn, or mushrooms the possibilities are infinite. Mix your veggies into a tomato sauce for a flavorful meal. Add spices to taste.

It is good to have a variety of spices on hand, as they can help to enhance simple meals. Oregano, garlic powder, olive oil, parsley, tarragon, basil, chili powder, and cumin. Buy the dried flakes as they are cheapest, and while fresh herbs are delicious, they aren’t necessary for a beautiful dinner. Salt and pepper are necessary to have in your arsenal, as well as butter, milk, cheese, and flour.

Buying the store brand items is a great idea. The extra cents spent on name brand foods adds up in the long run.

Deep in Michigan, a state renowned for its contributions to the automotive industry, a dark magic lurks, bringing the dreams and nightmares of a number of literary magicians to life. Some are well-known and critically acclaimed, some seem to have sprung full-grown from the shadows. The place where all of this happens is a small publisher called Subterranean Press, and it’s been happening since 1995.Almost all of the publisher’s books fit in the horror, mystery, fantasy, or science fiction genres, although not always neatly. For example, Joe R. Lansdale’s work often combines elements of fantasy, horror, mystery, and even westerns. Lansdale publishes a number of his unreleased stories in limited editions through the press, although most titles are sold out as of this writing.Subterranean Press publishes a quarterly self-titled magazine which is now free for reading online. The Summer 2010 issue features three novellas by Lucius Shepard, Mike Resnick, and Rachel Swirsky respectively, with a number of short stories, interviews, and reviews also included. Many of the books that Subterranean puts out come in two versions: trade edition or limited edition. The limited editions are generally signed and numbered and, of course, limited to a certain number of copies500 for the Swords & Dark Magic anthology. This is an example of one of Subterranean’s genre-based anthologies, where acclaimed fantasy authors like Joe Abercrombie, Gene Wolfe, Garth Nix, Scott Lynch, Bill Willingham, and more contribute stories in the “swords-and-sorcery” fantasy genre.Crime novelists Lawrence Block and Donald E. Westlake have a new publication coming out in October: Hellcats and Honeygirls, a collection of three collaborative novels the pair wrote back in the 1960s. The company’s hot current releases include Charles Stross’s collection of early short fiction, Toast, and Peter S. Beagle’s fantasy novel Return. Want to see the complete listing? Get over to the official Subterranean Press website. While you’re there, you can also sign up for the Subterranean Press Newsletter, which sends information on upcoming projects and other fun facts straight to your inbox.
