Sarasota News & Books is an award-winning independent bookstore, café, and newsstand at the corner of Main Street and Palm Avenue in downtown Sarasota. Over the years, this downtown landmark has emerged as a beloved institution for local booklovers of all ages and a destination for nationally acclaimed authors.
While Sarasota News & Books began in 1997, its origins can be traced back to its predecessor Charlie's News, a popular newsstand founded in 1957 by Charles Alschuler. Originally located several doors up on Main Street, Charlie's News was relocated by the Krongold family to its current location in 1974 after Palm Tower was converted from a hotel into an office building. The Krongold family turned Charlie's News into an institution for locals. After the Krongolds sold the business in the mid 80s, the business fell in decline and later closed. In 1997, Caren and Dick Lobo opened Sarasota News & Books, a completely renovated bookstore, newsstand, and café. In 2005, the Lobo's sold the building to Randall A. Bono, the current property owner, and sold the business to Andrew and Meghan Foley, who continue to run the business today.
